Horse photo collage, made from your own photos
The smell of hay and leather. A warm nose pushing into your pocket for the carrot you swore you didn't bring. Early mornings at the barn, muddy boots, the first canter, the ribbon that still hangs by the mirror. A horse photo collage is cut to a horse standing side-on, head up, with a flowing mane and a long tail, and filled with every one of those days at the barn.

How many photos fit
Every figure comes from the layout engine rather than a rule of thumb. The suggested count is where each photo prints about two inches across, big enough to make out a face from across the room. The minimum is 33 photos; below that, parts of the outline can be left without a photo. The horse is about as wide as it is tall, so a square print suits it best, such as 20 × 20″ or 24 × 24″.
| Print size | Photos | Suggested |
|---|---|---|
| 12 × 12″ | 33–60 | 33 |
| 12 × 18″ | 33–100 | 33 |
| 16 × 20″ | 33–140 | 33 |
| 16 × 24″ | 33–170 | 33 |
| 20 × 20″ | 33–180 | 33 |
| 20 × 30″ | 33–275 | 33 |
| 24 × 24″ | 33–250 | 45 |
| 24 × 36″ | 33–375 | 45 |
| 30 × 40″ | 33–525 | 70 |
| 36 × 54″ | 33–875 | 110 |
| 40 × 60″ | 33–1075 | 130 |
Questions
What about the space between the tail and the back leg?
There's a slim gap there, just like on a real horse. On a big print it shows as a clean line between tail and leg. On a smaller print it may close up. Either way it looks natural, so there's nothing to fix.
My horse is a grey, a paint, a bay. Does that matter?
Not at all. The outline has no color of its own. Your photos fill it, so a dapple grey looks grey and a paint looks like a paint.
Can I use it as a memorial?
Yes, and many people do. Losing a horse is losing a partner and a daily routine at once. Fill it with your favorite years together and put their name and dates underneath. Our pet memorial collages have more ideas for the words.
What occasions is it good for?
- A horse memorial, for the one who carried you
- A riding milestone, a first show or a first jump clear
- A show-season gift for the rider who lives at the barn
- A barn friend's birthday, signed by everyone at the stable
- A retiring school horse who taught half the town to ride
Which photos should I put in it?
- The first day you met, halter and all
- Show days, braids, ribbons and the long wait by the trailer
- Trail rides, open fields and ears forward, taking in the view
- Bath days, rolling in the mud right after bath days
- The quiet ones, a nose over the stall door at dusk
What can I write under the outline?
- Willow · 2009–2026
- Every ride, every ribbon, every carrot
- You carried me further than anyone
- Forever in my heart, forever in the saddle
- Thank you for teaching us all to ride
What do I get?
A Canva template already cut to this horse, mane and tail included, with every photo space placed, for $9.99. It opens in a free Canva account; you drop in your photos, type the two lines and print it anywhere. Nothing is shipped. It stays in your account, so a photo you find later can replace an old one.
