40th birthday photo collage: forty years, four hundred photos
Forty is a birthday for looking back and feeling proud. The kid in the school photo, the young graduate, the new parent up at 3am, the person they are today: they're all in there. A 40th birthday photo collage cut to the number 40 shows the whole life at once, and it has a way of making even the people who "don't do birthdays" stop, stare and go a little quiet.

40 years, 400 photos
Ten photos for every year makes 400. On a 54 × 36″ landscape print each one comes out a little over an inch across: step close to find every face, step back to see forty years at once. For bigger photos on a smaller wall, try around 140 on a 40 × 30″, each about an inch and a half.
What to put in it
- One photo from every year: write the years on a list and tick them off
- School and university days
- The wedding, if there was one
- The kids growing up, from first scan to first day of high school
- Work milestones and the hobbies: the bike, the band, the team
- A few from this year, so it lands on who they are now
Words for under the number
- Happy 40th Birthday Daniel
- Four decades of memories
- Forty and fabulous
- Life begins at 40
- Still our favourite person
The surprise party reveal
Keep it covered until after the cake, then unveil it. Leave a fine pen nearby and let the guests write a few words in the white margin around the number. By the end of the night it's a photo collage and a guestbook in one.
How to make a 40th birthday photo collage
- Design it free. Open the designer, choose a print size and how many photos, and see the 40 on a wall before you pay. Watch the 3-minute tour.
- Fill it in Canva. After checkout ($9.99) the template downloads instantly. Open it in a free Canva account and replace every sample photo with your own. Our Canva guide shows each step.
- Print it anywhere. Download a print-ready PDF and ask any print shop or online printer for it at actual size. Most print shops can print a poster in a day or two.
What size to print
The bigger the print, the more photos fit. These are the most photos a number collage holds at each size; choose fewer and each one prints bigger.
| Print size | Holds up to |
|---|---|
| 30 × 20″ | 275 |
| 36 × 24″ | 375 |
| 40 × 30″ | 525 |
| 54 × 36″ | 875 |
| 60 × 40″ | 1,075 |
For 400 photos, ten for every year, choose 40 × 30″ or larger. The 40 still reads clearly from as few as 9 photos.
Questions
Can the kids make it for their mom or dad?
Yes, and it's one of the most moving gifts a 40-year-old can get. Older kids can gather photos and fill the template themselves; younger ones can help choose the pictures and write the words underneath.
What if I can't find a photo from every year?
Nobody will notice a missing year. Ask parents and siblings for the early ones, and lean on the years you have plenty of. The number reads clearly at any count from 9 upwards.
What do I get?
A Canva template with the 40 already cut and every photo space placed, for $9.99. It downloads instantly; you open it in a free Canva account, drop in your photos, type your words and print it anywhere.
Can I add their name and the date?
Yes. Type any words under the 40 in Canva: their name, the date of the party, or a line like the ones above. You can change the font and colour to match the party.
How long does it take to make?
Designing it takes a few minutes. Filling it depends on how many photos you choose: a few dozen is a quick job, and a few hundred takes an evening or two, so start a week or two before the party. Sharing the photo hunt with family makes it faster.
