50th birthday photo collage: 50 years, 500 photos
Half a century. Five decades of first days, best friends, holidays, weddings, children and maybe grandchildren too. A 50th birthday photo collage is cut to the number 50 and holds up to 1,075 of your own photos on a big print, so there's room for the whole family's version of the story, not just the highlights. Most number collages stop at around a hundred photos. Fifty years deserve more than that.

50 years, 500 photos
Ten photos for every year makes 500. On a 60 × 40″ landscape print, our biggest, each one comes out a little over an inch across: small and detailed up close, and a sea of memories from across the room. Prefer bigger photos and a standard poster frame? Choose a 40 × 30″ with around 140, each about an inch and a half. The 50 reads clearly from as few as 9 photos.
What to put in it, decade by decade
- The early years: baby photos, school portraits, family holidays in faded colour
- The teens and twenties: friends, first jobs, travels, the old cars
- The thirties: the wedding, the first home, the babies
- The forties: the kids growing up, the family trips, the career highs
- Today: the people they love most, right now
Words for under the number
- Happy 50th Birthday Karen
- Half a century of you
- 50 years of love and laughter
- Fabulous at fifty
- Here's to the next fifty
Make it a family project
Five hundred photos sounds like a lot until you share the job. Give each sibling, child or old friend a decade and a deadline. The photos come back with stories attached, and the person who finishes the collage gets to see the whole life come together, one photo at a time.
How to make a 50th birthday photo collage
- Design it free. Open the designer, choose a print size and how many photos, and see the 50 on a wall before you pay. Watch the 3-minute tour.
- Fill it in Canva. After checkout ($9.99) the template downloads instantly. Open it in a free Canva account and replace every sample photo with your own. Our Canva guide shows each step.
- Print it anywhere. Download a print-ready PDF and ask any print shop or online printer for it at actual size. Most print shops can print a poster in a day or two.
What size to print
The bigger the print, the more photos fit. These are the most photos a number collage holds at each size; choose fewer and each one prints bigger.
| Print size | Holds up to |
|---|---|
| 30 × 20″ | 275 |
| 36 × 24″ | 375 |
| 40 × 30″ | 525 |
| 54 × 36″ | 875 |
| 60 × 40″ | 1,075 |
For 500 photos, ten for every year, choose 40 × 30″ or larger. The 50 still reads clearly from as few as 9 photos.
Questions
Isn't 500 photos too many?
Not if you want the whole life in one frame. On a 60 × 40″ print each photo is a little over an inch across: you step close to find each face, and step back to see fifty years at once. If you'd rather every photo be big, choose around 140 on a 40 × 30″ print.
How do I frame something that big?
A 60 × 40″ print looks wonderful in a simple poster hanger or a custom frame from a framing shop. If you'd rather use a ready-made frame, choose 40 × 30″, a standard poster frame size.
What do I get?
A Canva template with the 50 already cut and every photo space placed, for $9.99. It downloads instantly; you open it in a free Canva account, drop in your photos, type your words and print it anywhere.
Can I add their name and the date?
Yes. Type any words under the 50 in Canva: their name, the date of the party, or a line like the ones above. You can change the font and colour to match the party.
How long does it take to make?
Designing it takes a few minutes. Filling it depends on how many photos you choose: a few dozen is a quick job, and a few hundred takes an evening or two, so start a week or two before the party. Sharing the photo hunt with family makes it faster.
